Solos for Young Violinists is a graded series of works ranging from elementary to advanced levels representing an exciting variety of styles and techniques for violinists — a valuable resource for teachers and students of all ages. Many of the works in this collection have long been recognized as stepping stones to the major violin repertoire, while others are newly published pieces for further choices of study.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star No violin part as a previous review said
As another customer review said, this package delivered quickly but without violin part. It is confusing that the left upper corner of the book says violin and piano part but inside the book says piano part, I guess Amazon shipping clerk was not aware of this should be a two book package?

2 Stars Warning: this is volume 6!
We ordered this book for our daughter upon the recommendation of her violin teacher. The music seemed much too difficult for her – then we noticed that it was Volume 6 of a series! Nowhere in the description of the book does it mention this is Volume 6. Looking back now, with a magnifying glass (literally), I can see volume 6 in the left-hand corner of the picture of the book. But even when you look at the front cover view, the top is cut off so you wouldn’t see anything about Volume 6. We would be returning it but her teacher offered to buy it from us. Now we will go to a local store to make sure we are purchasing the correct item, which we should have done in the first place. Very misleading description.

1 Star No Violin Part
Amazon shipped this order twice without including the violin part. Finally I gave up and ordered it from another source. Return was a minor hassle as Amazon told me to preprint a return label which they they wanted to charge me for via deduction from refund. After a protest they came around and refunded entire price.

4 Stars Good music, but a little tough for a true beginner
These solos start with a few quite easy songs, but very quickly the solos become much more difficult. There doesn’t seem to be much for the “just a little better than rank beginner” player. That said, the music is much more satisfying than most available in books for beginning players.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Comment on pitches
Several people have commented on this recording sounding sharp. I suspect it has to do with different tuning standards. the standard tuning pitch here in the States is A 440, but in other parts of the world A 445 is often used. It would sound sharp by comparison, but is not necessarily “wrong”.

4 Stars Great to have with the text book!
I have been taking a lesson from Suzuki method teacher, and this CD has been a great suppliment in my busy life. Just listening to this CD for 5-10 minutes a day ( during the commute or cooking time) has been helping me to understand what I need to work on. My daily practice time is avarage 15 minutes or so, but I have been making good enough progress because of this listening program.

2 Stars It’s not good
I’ve been a Suzuki teacher for 12 years. I found that this CD is really out of tune and in many cases sloppy. It has one cool feature and that is it’s Suzuki playing Suzuki and he was in his 80s (I think) when it was recorded. The two other CD’s available, however, in some cases have lightning fast tempos. The new Midi CD-ROM seems to have solved that issue.

1 Star The performance does sound too sharp …
It’s really unfortunate that the performance on this CD does seem to sound too sharp as pointed out by a previous reviewer, who’s a Suzuki teacher. Our violins (both mine and my daugther’s) always sound quite a bit flatter than this CD after being tuned by my daughter’s Suzuki teacher, who has perfect pitch. One time earlier on, I also tried tuning our violins w/ this CD as aid (thinking our violins had gone too flat), and the teacher thought they were oddly out of tune more than usual (or in an odd way I guess since they were sharp, not flat) — well, she didn’t really say so, but her facial expression and gesture said it all. I never really brought this up w/ her before, but I think I will in our next lesson. And perhaps, I’ll buy a different CD for this series as well — maybe the David Nadien version as suggested elsewhere.

5 Stars good book
My daughter uses it and so far so good.

She just started to take lesson and 6 years old and able to read it herself.

The SUZUKI METHOD of Talent Education is based on Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s view that every child is born with ability, and that man is the son of his environment. According to Dr. Suzuki, a world-renowned violinist and teacher, the greatest joy an adult can know comes from developing a child’s potential so he/she can express all that is harmonious and best in human beings. Students are taught using the mother-tongue approach. Suzuki Violin School Materials include: Violin Parts (Vol. 1-10) * Piano Accompaniments (Vol. 1-10) * Cassettes (Vol. 1-3 performed by Shinichi Suzuki, Vol. 4-8 performed by Koji Toyoda) * Compact Discs (Vol. 5-8, performed by Koji Toyoda) * David Cerone Performs Suzuki Violin School (Cassettes & Compact Discs, Vol. 1-4) * David Nadien Performs Suzuki Violin School (Cassettes and Compact Discs, Vol. 1-4). Suzuki Method Core Materials available for piano, violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, harp, guitar, and recorder.

5 Stars Suzuki method is THE method for learning violin
I grew up learning the Suzuki method and believe in it 100%. But, until you are an accomplished violinist (not accomplished at Volume 3), the most benefits will be realized by direction, not by self-teaching. Suzuki method is also a philosophy – look for the book by Suzuki himself explaining this. My violin teacher made all her students’ parents read this when we started lessons.

This collection of songs not only is a good collection to learn various techniques on the violin, but I still have fun years later playing them over and over.

5 Stars Just as fabulous as the previous volumes
Having now progressed to volume 5, I can tell you how wonderful the Suzuki method really is.

Volume 3 is where the difficulty begins to mount. The difficulty is to prepare you for Volume 4, in which new elements are introduced. Practice makes perfect, however, and playing songs instead of pratices helps build tonalization and intonation. The only it does not build, however, is good sight reading. This is not really developed until the 4th volume.

Suzuki method is not designed, however, for self-taught students. In response to another reviewer, the method is designed to help an instructor instruct the student by presenting a collection os pieces that help build the aforementioned items.

3 Stars Okay but not so great
Decent collection of music but litte variation in theme. Little to no assistance/tips for the student. Okay but not so great.

5 Stars Excellent
Suzuki method fails to disappoint me again. The songs advance a little with each book, but just enough to keep it challenging.

5 Stars Excellent version of Suzuki Violin 1 CD
David Nadien’s CD is a great version – it includes the piano accompaniments so that your child can play with the CD.

5 Stars Great
Great recording. It really helps to listen to these if you are taking Suzuki lessons.

5 Stars Great CD
This is the 3rd CD from the Suzuki series we’ve purchased. Like

the 1st two CDs, it’s good, clear and well played. The piano accompaniment is not overwhelming nor is it too soft. My daughter enjoys listening and playing her violin along with these CDs. It’s a good idea to have this to play the new songs so your child can hear the pieces for Book 3 of the Suzuki pieces. She asks for it when we’re in the car so that she can listen to it while I drive.

5 Stars Great Choice for the Adult Beginner
This is the first book on basic violin that I found to have a comfortable and logical flow to it. Great for the adult beginner. Everything is anticipated, easy enough, but not terminally “cutesy” as a lot of children’s books are. Better to have it with a good instructor — but with it and a good music theory work book you should make progress.

4 Stars Excellent start off
This book is an excellent book to start of with, other than just folk and classic, it should have jazz, and you definately need a tutor or more experienced player, to mark the exact points for where the notes are, then the book is the best thing to start of with, I learnt my first song, myself thanks to this book.

3 Stars For a Beginner
This book will really help you out if you haven’t even played a note on it before. Within a few months, it will probably be time to buy the second Essential Elements book.

5 Stars Great way to start learning violin!
My 10 year old just began lessons and the instructor chose this book. My daughter finds it fun and easy to progress. The book also holds her interest as she is “plucking” songs she recognizes.

4 Stars Isn’t quite what I needed
This book would be great for anyone who has no music background at all These are the books my school used in 5th and 6th grade for band. However, I was able to blaze through it because I already read music and have pretty good tonality and aptitute for playing, so it didn’t quite meet my needs. If you’re looking for a book that explains more about technique and care for the violin, this won’t answer your questions.
